Antonio Salieri

For decades Antonio Salieri ran musical life in Vienna. Born in Legnago in northern Italy in 1750, he was brought to the Austrian capital as a teenager, caught the ear of Emperor Joseph II, and rose to court composer and then court music director, a post he held for 36 years. He wrote successful operas for Vienna, Paris, and Milan, and his students included Beethoven, Schubert, and the young Liszt.
Today he is mostly remembered for a story that isn't true. Rumors that he poisoned Mozart circulated after Mozart's death and were later amplified by a Pushkin play and the film Amadeus. The two men competed for jobs and commissions, as everyone in Vienna did, but there is no evidence of anything darker.
His music is heard rarely now, which makes the Variations on "La folia di Spagna," a late set of orchestral variations on an old Spanish tune, the natural place to start.
