Richard Strauss

Richard Strauss was born in Munich in 1864, the son of the city's leading horn player, and grew up steeped in the orchestra. He led a double career at the top of German music for six decades: as one of the great conductors of his time, and as a composer who first shocked and then charmed the public.

His twenties and thirties produced the tone poems, single-movement orchestral works that tell stories or paint ideas in sound, from the swagger of Don Juan to the sunrise opening of Also sprach Zarathustra, made universally famous by the film 2001. Then came the operas: the scandalous Salome and Elektra, followed by the bittersweet Viennese comedy Der Rosenkavalier. At eighty-four he wrote the Four Last Songs, as serene a farewell as any composer has managed.
