Wilhelm Stenhammar

Wilhelm Stenhammar earned his living at the piano and on the conductor's podium, and composing had to fit around the day jobs. Born in Stockholm in 1871, he led the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra from 1907 to 1922, building it into a serious ensemble and championing the music of Sibelius and Nielsen, contemporaries he knew and admired.
His own music came slowly and self-critically; he withdrew his first symphony after deciding it owed too much to other composers, and let years pass between major works. What remains at the center of his output is a handful of orchestral pieces and songs with a cool, northern lyricism to them.
The Serenade in F major, written after a stay in Italy, is the piece admirers usually reach for first. The Symphony no. 2 in G minor is the other essential.
