Antonín Dvořák grew up in a Bohemian village north of Prague, the son of a butcher and innkeeper who expected him to take over the trade. Instead he went to Prague, played viola in theater orchestras for years, and composed in the evenings until Brahms noticed his work and helped him find a publisher. Fame followed quickly.

His music folds the dance rhythms and song shapes of his Czech homeland into symphonies and chamber music, which is why so much of it feels both grand and homey at once. From 1892 to 1895 he directed a conservatory in New York, homesick much of the time, and spent a happy summer among Czech immigrants in Spillville, Iowa.
