Edvard Grieg

Edvard Grieg came from Bergen, on Norway's west coast, and though he trained at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany, he spent his career turning Norwegian folk melody into concert music. At a time when Norway was still asserting its cultural identity, his songs and piano pieces gave the country a musical voice, and they made him famous well beyond it.

He was happiest working small. Across his life he published ten books of Lyric Pieces, short piano works you can hold in one hand, and he composed in a little hut by the fjord at Troldhaugen, his home outside Bergen. His biggest public success was the music he wrote for Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, premiered in 1876, which he later shaped into concert suites.
