Fernando Lopes-Graça

Fernando Lopes-Graça was born in Tomar, Portugal, in 1906 and became the central figure in twentieth-century Portuguese concert music. He studied in Lisbon and later in Paris, worked as a pianist, teacher, and writer on music, and composed steadily across a very long life: symphonic works, piano music, and hundreds of choral arrangements.

Politics shaped his career as much as music did. A committed communist, he opposed the Salazar dictatorship, and the regime answered by jailing him for a time and repeatedly barring him from official teaching posts. His deepest project was the Portuguese folk song itself: he traveled the countryside collecting traditional melodies with the ethnographer Michel Giacometti and built much of his own music from what they found.
